I was at a seminar yesterday in the Uk where Ikea have reduced the usage of plastic bags in their stores since they introduced charging for long live bags. They have not seen a reduction in custom but now do not have the litter issue of bags left in the car park or around the store surrounds. They were spending approx £400,000 on provision of disposable bags for their customers which they are now saving and using to put back into the environment.

My son has a laptop lunch kit and we love it. The best part is that I can just dunk the whole thing in the dishwater and it all washes up quickly!

I will admit I bought his online from the USA about 2 years ago - and the retail price was much less than $49.95 after conversion even, but it's well worth it!

Plastic bags have not been banned or taxed in Australia, although this is being discussed. What my research has discovered is that there is a lot of misinformation about plastic shopping bags - NO they do not kill marine animals - those bags are bait bags or waste discarded at sea. They do take a long time to break down in lanfill. So what? So do rocks and bricks. When things don't break down they cannot contributr to leachate and emissions.

I take my plastic shopping bags home and reuse them as bin liners and taking the dog for a walk. Statistics from Ireland show that sales of bin liners skyrocketed after the tax on shopping bahs was introduced. So where is the benefit?

"Given the millions of cups of coffee consumed in Canada every day" - I read on the Town of Aurora's website at http://town.aurora.on.ca/aurora/index.aspx?ArticleID=1310&lang=en-CA that Green Bins are coming in the fall and that 'paper cups' are acceptable. I also read an article in the Toronto Star indicating that Tim Horton's cups are not acceptable in Toronto's green bins because of the lining of the cups. Hmmm.

What do you think?

Hi
I recently revamped a can and recycling program at my Highschool where we sort cans and Pete bottles and sell the pop cans as a fund raiser (the Pete bottles are picked up by a local recycler). I thought I would add to their collection and decided to find the above at the HYW 403 access points to Brantford. It was amazing the amount of stuff that is thrown out of cars. I found #1 was Pete bottles, # 2 coffee cups, # 3 pop cans, # 4 beer cans, # 5 beer bottles. The city had put garbage cans at the stop lights, but seldom emptied them. I am interested to here any development on the ability to recycle Tim Horton cups.
